The Veluwe Sand Sculpture Festival is an annual event. Its theme in 2016 is ‘The world of Rien Poortvliet’. Rien Poortvliet was a ‘storyteller in drawings’.
He loved going into the countryside and then painting its beauty back in his studio. Many of his paintings are of hunting scenes, life on the farm and animals in all shapes and sizes. He was also uniquely able to imagine himself back in time, something which is clearly visible in his well-known and much-loved book “In my grandfather’s house”. And of course there are the gnomes too! One thing is certain, those gnomes had adventurous lives.
